Gypsies Green Action Group GGAG launches

At a well attended public meeting last night at the Crown Hotel South Shields the Gypsies Green Action Group was formed by the residents of South Shields opposed to the South Foreshore Hotel Development at Gyspsies Green Stadium, South Shields,

Over 60 people expressed their concerns at the lack of public consultation regarding the proposed sale of the land belonging to the residents and ratepayers of South Tyneside and their opposition to the extrusive development which will detract from rather than add to the amenity of the area.

As a concerned citizen of South Shields I appeal to everyone to support our campaign to stop South Tyneside Council selling off Gypsies Green Stadium for private development as a five storey 4 star hotel.
This land is public land for every citizen to use and enjoy.
It can easily be rejuvenated to its former use as a sports stadium.
The present Government has stressed the need for a spotlight on sport to overcome obesity in youngsters, reduce crime by generating other interests in order to promote a healthier population and would consequently indirectly result in savings to the NHS. However, here is a Labour Council selling off a sports stadium to a private developer who is likely, because of the non viability of a four star hotel, eventually try to change the planned hotel into apartments to be sold off at an obscene profit.
This massive structure will blight the landscape and ruin a pristine microcosm which is our legacy to future generations and all at the whim of a group of councillors who appear hell bent on destroying our magnificent coastline and who have suddenly adopted a course of secrecy in their dealings with their preferred developer contrary to several requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, and who now, because of their fear of opposition, are declaring the council chamber procedures on this item to be secret under the guise of them being of a delicate commercial nature.
I would also ask the question "Has any member of the council (including the Mayor) or any relation of the councillors past or present or any employee of the council been or are presently employed by the developer (Tavistock Leisure)."
Should the answer to this question be yes, and I belief it is, this should be considered as a Conflict of Interest.
The citizens of South Tyneside and all visitors who come to our town to admire the view that will soon be marred have little time to react. Please consider signing the petition on this site as an act for generations to come.

What is wrong with you people??
A top class hotel bringing people and jobs to the area. I for one am for this hotel in every way. Well done the council for having such a good idea. It seems to me you people have nothing better to do than complain about something. I'm sure there are far more important things to complain about than something which is good for the local area.

Gavin. I just cant understand that you want this ugly thing spoiling the coast.

Gavin, I think you are missing the point here. This land was sold to the Council for the recreational use of the local population, not for the council and private enterprise to make megga bucks.

In a perfect world it would be nice to leave the piece of land untouched... However the only real industry we have is tourism so I think this could be a great idea!! we do need guarantees that this is not 'the thin end of the wedge' but I for one think that people will come and stay in a four star hotel as it is lovely here, please tell me why they won't???- those that think people will not come obviously have a negative view of what our beautiful coastline offers. limited development might be the boost the area needs. Lets just make sure it is what the MAJORITY want
